She appeared to be homeless. I took her picture from across the street. Not because she was homeless, but because I found her interesting. In her I could see a beauty that once was. Mentally I moved on, looking for the next shot. When the light changed, she walked by and said in broken English "Merry Christmas". Her voice was soft and gentle, almost fragile. I returned her Merry Christmas, but she was gone before I could get my wallet out. I chased after her and gave her a dollar bill. I slightly bowed my head and gave her the dollar with both hands. (A sign of respect in Chinese culture.) I was embarrassed. All I had were twenties, if I had more singles or even a five dollar bill I would have given them to her. She had a look of surprise on her face. She was not expecting money. We both bowed our heads, said Merry Christmas again and parted ways.
